 Parish Profile Lets meet MICHAEL
HERMAN
who has been at St. Lukes since October 2002 and has recently
become one of our regular Sunday readers. Michael is single and a full-time caregiver for
his mother, something he is very passionate about. Michael has been caring for his mom for
the last 12 years.
Michael enjoys keeping busy and has many interests and hobbies that include extemporaneous
speaking, swimming, hiking, biking and the American Revolutionary War. He has visited many
of the battlefields from that era and strongly believes that Valley Forge was the
Jerusalem of the United States.
While on leave from the Marines on January 20, 1961, he was struck by a car which resulted
in the amputation of his leg above the knee and partial blindness in his left eye caused
by striking his head on the curb. The driver lost 9 points and was given a fine of $100.
Michael was awarded $2500.**
A year later his father died and Michael became the prime support for his mother and five
sisters. He had wanted to become a surgeon or an engineer but the accident changed his
plans. Still he went on to earn three degrees, 2 Bachelors and an Associate degree in
Liberal Arts. Michael earned his livelihood through insurance, financial trading and
commodities.
Today he is an active volunteer. He has helped at Columbia Hospital for the last 10 years
and also lends a hand at Schliltz Audubon Center and Laurel Oaks Nursing Home. Michael
calls his volunteer service a nice little blessing and encourages others to
get involved.
His two favorite Bible verses are John 3:17 and proverbs 14:20.
