Dear Friends,
St. Luke's has another opportunity to make an AMAZING difference in the life of 3rd Grade students at Malaika Early Learning Center in the Harambee Neighborhood of Milwaukee. We have been supporting young scholars at Malaika since 2018.
Malaika is licensed by the state to serve 70 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 years in their child care program, and 100 students in their school program (K4-3rd grade). Enrolled children represent many neighborhoods across the city of Milwaukee. About two-thirds of the children enrolled come from single-parent households, with over 90% of parents earning incomes at or below the Federal low-income level. The entire mission of Malaika is to make sure children are proficient in reading by the 3rd grade, because if they are not, statistics reveal they are likely to remain woefully behind the rest of their educational careers.
We are hoping to collect all the school supplies for the entire 3rd grade class, which will have 20 students this year. In the past, we have asked people to buy everything on the School Supply List for each student, which typically cost a donor $150-$200. This year, once again, we want to extend an invitation to anybody and everybody who would like to make a contribution. So, instead of needing to buy all of the school supplies for each student, we want to extend an invitation to buy any specific item or make a monetary donation and we will take care of purchasing things. Sometimes people want to order in bulk to save money, so one person may want to buy all of the rulers, or all of the folders. Again, we hope this approach lowers costs and allows more people to participate.
Here is the school list for the upcoming school year with the amount we need in total for the entire class.
1 Backpack (Solid Color) x 20
1 Pair of Wired Headphones x 20
1 Reusable Water Bottle x 20
1 12 inch ruler x 20
4 Large Pink Erasers x 20
5 Solid Color Folders (Plastic or Vinyl Preferred) x 20
1 Plastic School/Pencil Box x 20
4 Packs of #2 Pencils (24 pencils in each pack) x 20
1 Box of Crayola Colored Pencils (24 ct) x 20
1 24 Count Crayons x 20
1 Box of Crayola Washable Markers x 20
4 glue sticks x 20
4 Pack Black Expo Dry Erase Markers-fine or chisel tip x 20
4 Pack Fluorescent Highlighters x 20
1 box of Gallon–sized Ziploc bags x 20
1 pack of Post-it Notes, square size 2x2 x 20
Malaika is asking that we have all our supplies donated by August 21st this year. If you would like to purchase anything on the list above, or if you wish to make a monetary donation or have questions, please email Joyce Britt at [email protected] and let her know what your intentions are. If you are donating cash, you can place your money in an envelope marked "School Supplies" or put "School Supplies" on the memo line of your check. You can also donate online. Please select "Give to School Supply Donations from the drop down menu. Click here to donate online.
Thank you again for your amazing generosity!!!
